Arusha National Park Safari

Tanzania's Premier Wildlife Destination

Discover Tanzania's most accessible yet dramatically diverse national park, where Mount Meru's volcanic majesty dominates landscapes ranging from pristine montane forests to sparkling alkaline lakes. Just 45 minutes from Arusha, this compact 137 km² gem offers walking safaris, canoeing adventures, and remarkable wildlife encounters - the perfect Northern Circuit introduction or day trip.

Why Choose a Arusha National Park Safari?

Arusha National Park is Northern Tanzania's best-kept secret - a stunning microcosm of East African habitats compressed into just 137 km². Dominated by the towering volcanic cone of Mount Meru (4,566m), Africa's fifth-highest peak, the park encompasses three distinct zones: the shallow alkaline Momella Lakes attracting thousands of flamingos, the lush montane forests harboring troops of acrobatic colobus monkeys, and the spectacular Ngurdoto Crater - often called 'Little Ngorongoro.' Its proximity to Arusha (45 minutes) makes it ideal for day trips, arrival/departure day visits, or as an atmospheric introduction to safari adventures before heading to the Serengeti.

Regions to Explore

Mount Meru

Africa's fifth-highest mountain at 4,566m dominates the skyline with its dramatic volcanic cone. The 3-4 day Meru trek is considered one of Tanzania's finest mountain walks - less crowded than Kilimanjaro but equally spectacular. Even non-climbers appreciate the mountain's presence, creating stunning photographic backdrops and influencing the park's diverse ecosystems.

Momella Lakes

A series of seven shallow alkaline lakes, each with different mineral compositions creating varied colors from jade green to turquoise blue. These soda lakes attract thousands of lesser and greater flamingos, along with 400+ bird species. Canoeing safaris offer unique water-based wildlife viewing - a rare Tanzania experience. Giraffes and buffalo frequent the shorelines.

Ngurdoto Crater

Often called 'Little Ngorongoro,' this pristine 3km-wide volcanic caldera features steep forested walls dropping 400m to a swampy crater floor teeming with buffalo, warthogs, and baboons. Viewing is from the crater rim only (no descent permitted), offering spectacular panoramic vistas. The surrounding highland forest harbors colobus monkeys and elephants.

Montane Forest & Fig Tree Arch

Dense mountain rainforest creates a cathedral-like atmosphere with massive strangler figs and towering forest giants. The famous Fig Tree Arch - large enough to drive through - has become the park's photographic icon. Black & white colobus monkeys leap through the canopy while blue monkeys forage below. Walking safaris here are magical.
