Safari Overview

Synchronize your pulse with the earth on this five-day private safari built around the most dramatic chapter of the Great Wildebeest Migration. From July through September, more than 1.5 million wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle push north through the Serengeti toward the Mara River — and you follow them. This is not a generic northern circuit tour with migration mentioned in passing: the route is deliberately sequenced to place you in Central Serengeti first, then the Northern Serengeti where river crossings unfold, then back through the heart of the park before sweeping south to Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire National Park.

Your journey begins with a scenic overland drive from Arusha into Central Serengeti National Park, where Tukaone Serengeti Camps puts you inside the park among acacia-dotted plains and kopje-studded horizons. An afternoon and evening in camp — sundowners, campfire stories, the sounds of the bush at night — set the tone for what follows. On Day 2 you head north, tracking the migration toward Intimate Camp Zebra in the Northern Serengeti, one of the quietest and most wildlife-rich corners of the entire ecosystem. This is front-row territory for Mara River crossings: herds massing on the banks, crocodiles waiting below, predators working the fringes. Some crossings are orderly; others dissolve into chaos. Either way, they rank among the most thrilling spectacles in the animal kingdom.

Day 3 brings you back south through the Serengeti with en route game drives and a picnic lunch in the park, returning to Tukaone in Central Serengeti for another night under the stars. The Seronera region rewards repeat visits — resident lion prides, leopards in riverine forest, cheetah on open plains, and migration herds when they pass through. Day 4 is Ngorongoro day: after breakfast you drive to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, descend 600 metres through lush highland forest, and spend a full day on the crater floor among one of Earth's highest concentrations of large mammals. Black rhinos, massive-tusked elephants, lion prides, flamingos on Lake Magadi, and endless herds of zebra and wildebeest fill a natural amphitheatre unlike anywhere else on the continent. You overnight at Martina's Retreat in Karatu — warm hospitality and a peaceful garden setting after a long crater day.

The safari finishes on a high note at Tarangire National Park. Tarangire rivals the Serengeti in wildlife diversity and is renowned for elephant sightings — herds numbering in the hundreds gather along the Tarangire River, the park's only permanent water source. Ancient baobab trees frame the landscape like natural cathedrals, and the combination of marshland, riverine forest, and open savannah supports an extraordinary density of game. After a picnic lunch in the park, you drive back to Arusha for onward travel. Throughout, you travel in a private pop-up roof 4x4 with your own English-speaking guide — no shared groups, no fixed schedules. Porcupine Tours is family-run by Johannes and Jacqueline Weigl; a portion of every booking supports the School of St. Jude in Arusha.

Who Is This Safari For?

This safari is built for travellers who want the Great Wildebeest Migration as the centrepiece of their Tanzania trip — not a side note on a standard northern circuit. It suits couples, families with children aged 3 and above, and small groups of friends who prefer a private vehicle and guide, wildlife photographers chasing river crossings and predator action, and safari enthusiasts returning to Tanzania specifically for the July–September migration window. If you have limited time but refuse to compromise on migration positioning, this five-day route delivers Northern Serengeti, Central Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and Tarangire in a single focused itinerary.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arusha to Central Serengeti National Park

After breakfast at your accommodation in Arusha, board your private pop-up roof 4x4 safari jeep and set out for Serengeti National Park — a scenic overland journey of roughly 335 km through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area highlands, where Maasai pastoralists graze cattle alongside wildlife before the landscape opens onto the legendary Serengeti plains.

En route game drives and a picnic lunch keep you in the field as you approach the park. Upon entering Serengeti, spend the afternoon immersed in the heart of the wilderness, searching for the Big Five and the abundant plains game that define this ecosystem. A sundowner stop with drinks, snacks, and spectacular views over the Serengeti is a highlight of the day.

As evening falls, gather around the campfire to share stories of the day's sightings while the African night comes alive. Dinner and overnight at Tukaone Serengeti Camps in Central Serengeti — solar-powered tented accommodation with private en-suite facilities and the sounds of the bush just metres from your tent.

Day 2: Central Serengeti to Northern Serengeti — Following the Migration

After breakfast, head north into the Northern Serengeti National Park, following the Great Wildebeest Migration as herds push toward the Mara River. The river crossing is one of the world's most incredible wildlife events: over 1.5 million wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle move in a vast circular pattern between the Serengeti and the Mara River, and the drama intensifies here between July and September.

While some animals cross unscathed, others fall prey to waiting crocodiles and the predators that work the riverbanks — lions, hyenas, and cheetahs all capitalise on the chaos. Your guide uses daily intelligence on herd movements to position you at the best vantage points. Considered the most thrilling spectacle in the animal kingdom, the annual mass migration of wildebeest and other herbivores, with their ever-attendant entourage of predators, is a breathtaking experience that no photograph fully captures.

Dinner and overnight at Intimate Camp Zebra — a characterful tented camp in the Northern Serengeti with large canvas tents looking out across open savannah, one of the quietest and most wildlife-rich corners of the entire park.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner (Full Board)

Day 3: Northern Serengeti to Central Serengeti

Awake to the sights and sounds of the bush as the African sun lights the treetops and grasslands. An early morning game drive in the Northern Serengeti catches predators at their most active and may reveal fresh migration movement along the river corridors.

After breakfast, drive south through the Serengeti with en route game viewing and a picnic lunch in the park. The return journey through Central Serengeti offers another perspective on the Seronera heartland — kopjes harbouring leopards, lion prides on the plains, and cheetah scanning from termite mounds.

A sunset game drive caps the afternoon before you arrive back at Tukaone Serengeti Camps for dinner and your second night under the Central Serengeti stars.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner (Full Board)

Day 4: Serengeti to Ngorongoro Crater — Karatu

After an early breakfast, leave the Serengeti with packed lunches and drive to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Tanzania's most extraordinary landscapes. En route game viewing adds to the day's sightings before you reach the crater rim.

Descend 600 metres through lush highland forest alive with birdlife, emerging onto the grassy crater floor where grazing herbivores and their predators create one of Earth's most concentrated wildlife spectacles. The 260 sq km floor is surprisingly diverse — permanent soda lake, open savannah, mature woodland, and swamp — all enclosed by steep forested walls rising over 600 metres high, like a vast natural amphitheatre.

Watch for lion prides, endangered black rhinos, massive-tusked elephants, buffalo herds, hippos, and flamingos on Lake Magadi. After ascending the crater walls in the afternoon, drive to Karatu and check in at Martina's Retreat for dinner and overnight.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner (Full Board)

Day 5: Tarangire National Park — Return to Arusha

After breakfast, hop in your 4x4 safari jeep and enter Tarangire National Park for a final morning and afternoon of game viewing. Tarangire rivals the Serengeti in the diversity and abundance of its wildlife and is especially renowned for elephant sightings — herds gather along the Tarangire River, the only permanent water source in the area, creating outstanding viewing throughout the dry season.

The landscape is a photographer's dream: ancient baobab trees punctuate the horizon, and extensive marshlands paint the reserve in vivid greens. Watch for lions, leopards, giraffes, zebra, wildebeest, and over 550 bird species as you explore the park. Lunch is taken at a scenic picnic site inside the park.

In the late afternoon, drive back to Arusha for onward travel arrangements. Airport transfers can be arranged on request. Safari njema — safe journey!

What to Expect

Expect five intensive days of private game viewing across four of Tanzania's finest wildlife destinations. Your guide adapts each day to herd movements, weather, and your interests — waiting at a Mara River vantage point, rerouting for a fresh lion sighting, or taking an unhurried crater descent. Early starts are part of the rhythm: migration activity and predator hunts peak in the cooler morning hours. Roads inside the parks are unpaved and game drives can be bumpy; this is the authentic safari experience. All three overnight properties are mid-range with en-suite facilities, full board meals, and genuine bush atmosphere — tented camps inside the Serengeti and a comfortable lodge in Karatu. The final day adds Tarangire's elephant country and baobab landscapes before returning to Arusha.

Best Time to Visit

This itinerary is designed for the July–September window when the Great Wildebeest Migration reaches the Northern Serengeti and Mara River crossings are at their most dramatic. Herds typically mass along the riverbanks during this period, though crossings are nature's schedule — not a timetable — and your guide positions you based on daily intelligence. Outside peak migration months, the route still delivers exceptional wildlife viewing: Central Serengeti big cats are year-round, Ngorongoro Crater maintains superb resident populations in every season, and Tarangire's elephant herds are legendary during the dry season (June–October). For the calving migration in southern Serengeti (January–March), consider our 7-Day Calving Migration Safari instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to see Mara River crossings on this safari?

The Northern Serengeti Mara River crossings are most likely between July and September, which is why this itinerary is sequenced for that window. Crossings are unpredictable — they can happen at any time of day and depend on rainfall, grass conditions, and herd movements — but your guide uses daily reports and years of local experience to maximise your chances. Even without a crossing on a given day, the Northern Serengeti delivers outstanding big cat viewing, enormous herds on the plains, and a remoteness that the central Serengeti cannot match during peak season.

How does this differ from your 4-Day Bush Safari or 5-Day Big Five & Cats safari?

Both shorter safaris focus on Central Serengeti and Ngorongoro without the Northern Serengeti migration push. This 5-day migration itinerary adds a full day and night in the Northern Serengeti at Intimate Camp Zebra specifically to follow the herds toward the Mara River, plus a final day in Tarangire National Park. If your travel dates fall in July–September and the migration is your priority, this is the right choice. For year-round big cat viewing without the northern drive, the 5-Day Big Five & Cats safari is better value outside migration season.

What is included in the from price of USD $2,744?

The from price is based on four travellers sharing your private vehicle at mid-range accommodation — our best per-person rate for this itinerary. Smaller groups pay more because vehicle and guide costs are divided among fewer people; couples should expect a higher per-person rate. The price includes your private 4x4 with pop-up roof, English-speaking guide, all park and crater fees, four nights full board at Tukaone Serengeti Camps, Intimate Camp Zebra, and Martina's Retreat, airport transfers, Fly Doctor evacuation cover, mineral water and soft drinks on drives, WiFi in the vehicle, and binoculars. Not included: international flights, Tanzania visa, travel insurance, optional hot air balloon (USD 520), tips, and personal expenses.

Is this safari suitable for children?

Yes — the minimum age is 3 years, and the private format lets your family set the pace. Game drives can be long and roads inside the parks are bumpy, so children who enjoy wildlife and can sit patiently in a vehicle tend to thrive. The tented camps have en-suite facilities and the variety of landscapes — migration herds, crater wildlife, Tarangire elephants — keeps each day visually distinct. We recommend bringing snacks, sun protection, and a warm layer for early mornings. Child pricing is available on request.

A Serengeti safari is Africa's most iconic wildlife experience — and for good reason. Spanning 14,750 square kilometres of pristine savanna, the Serengeti National Park hosts the Great Migration, where over two million wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles thunder across endless plains in one of nature's most breathtaking spectacles. The Serengeti — meaning 'endless plains' in the Maasai language — is Tanzania's oldest national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, established in 1952 to protect one of Earth's most extraordinary ecosystems. Beyond the migration, the Serengeti is home to Africa's densest lion population, with over 3,000 individuals roaming the plains, alongside leopards draped over acacia branches, cheetahs sprinting across open grasslands, and massive herds of elephants and buffalo. Whether you visit during the dramatic calving season in the southern plains (December–March), the Grumeti River crossings of the western corridor (June–July), or the legendary Mara River crossings in the north (August–October), a Serengeti safari delivers unforgettable wildlife encounters at every season of the year.
