5-Day Migration Safari

Synchronize your pulse with the earth on this five-day private safari built around the most dramatic chapter of the Great Wildebeest Migration. From July through September, more than 1.5 million wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle push north through the Serengeti toward the Mara River — and you follow them. This is not a generic northern circuit tour with migration mentioned in passing: the route is deliberately sequenced to place you in Central Serengeti first, then the Northern Serengeti where river crossings unfold, then back through the heart of the park before sweeping south to Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire National Park.

Your journey begins with a scenic overland drive from Arusha into Central Serengeti National Park, where Tukaone Serengeti Camps puts you inside the park among acacia-dotted plains and kopje-studded horizons. An afternoon and evening in camp — sundowners, campfire stories, the sounds of the bush at night — set the tone for what follows. On Day 2 you head north, tracking the migration toward Intimate Camp Zebra in the Northern Serengeti, one of the quietest and most wildlife-rich corners of the entire ecosystem. This is front-row territory for Mara River crossings: herds massing on the banks, crocodiles waiting below, predators working the fringes. Some crossings are orderly; others dissolve into chaos. Either way, they rank among the most thrilling spectacles in the animal kingdom.

Day 3 brings you back south through the Serengeti with en route game drives and a picnic lunch in the park, returning to Tukaone in Central Serengeti for another night under the stars. The Seronera region rewards repeat visits — resident lion prides, leopards in riverine forest, cheetah on open plains, and migration herds when they pass through. Day 4 is Ngorongoro day: after breakfast you drive to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, descend 600 metres through lush highland forest, and spend a full day on the crater floor among one of Earth's highest concentrations of large mammals. Black rhinos, massive-tusked elephants, lion prides, flamingos on Lake Magadi, and endless herds of zebra and wildebeest fill a natural amphitheatre unlike anywhere else on the continent. You overnight at Martina's Retreat in Karatu — warm hospitality and a peaceful garden setting after a long crater day.

The safari finishes on a high note at Tarangire National Park. Tarangire rivals the Serengeti in wildlife diversity and is renowned for elephant sightings — herds numbering in the hundreds gather along the Tarangire River, the park's only permanent water source. Ancient baobab trees frame the landscape like natural cathedrals, and the combination of marshland, riverine forest, and open savannah supports an extraordinary density of game. After a picnic lunch in the park, you drive back to Arusha for onward travel.
