Safari Overview

Leave the lodge circuit behind and step into the African bush on foot. This 3-day fly-camping safari combines a classic Tarangire National Park game drive with two nights of true wilderness camping in Randilen Wildlife Management Area — a community-conserved corridor on Tarangire’s eastern edge where walking safaris reveal tracks, plants, and wildlife that vehicles never reach.

Day one takes you from Moshi or Arusha into Tarangire’s baobab savannah for an immersive game drive among elephant herds, then onward toward Randilen. There you meet a professional walking guide for an evening stroll that ends at your fly-camp: tents already pitched, dinner by the fire, and a night under open sky. Day two is devoted to walking — a full day with guide and armed ranger, bush lunch in a scenic clearing, and another night in camp (with an optional Baobab Sleepout for those who want to spend the night in an ancient tree canopy).

On the final morning you return toward Arusha or Moshi with an en-route game drive — one last chance to spot wildlife before the road home. Designed for adventurous travellers who value immersion over amenity lists, this short safari delivers a rare depth of bush connection in just three days. Pricing is based on four guests sharing; smaller groups pay a modest premium.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Moshi / Arusha – Tarangire – Randilen Fly-Camp

Depart Moshi or Arusha after breakfast and drive to Tarangire National Park, one of Tanzania’s most rewarding wildlife destinations. After park entry formalities, begin an immersive game drive through vast savannahs dotted with iconic ancient baobab trees. Tarangire is renowned for the large number and diversity of wildlife within the park and is particularly famous for its impressive elephant population — ideal for close, memorable encounters.

Lunch is served at a picnic site surrounded by the park’s natural beauty. Continue with an en-route game drive toward the exit gate into Randilen Wildlife Management Area. On arrival you meet your professional walking guide and set out on an evening walking safari. On foot, your guide introduces tracks, plants, wildlife, and bush details often missed from a vehicle.

As the sun sets, walk toward your fly-camping site, already prepared for overnight. Enjoy dinner around camp and the sounds of the wilderness before sleeping under the African sky.

Day 2: Full-Day Walking Safari in Randilen

After an early breakfast at camp, set out on a full-day walking safari with an experienced professional walking guide and an armed ranger. Walking through Randilen’s open wilderness offers a completely different perspective of the African bush — close to nature and away from usual safari vehicle routes.

Your morning walk follows the peaceful sounds of the bush as your guide helps you discover animal tracks, footprints, droppings, birds, insects, medicinal plants, and other signs of wildlife often overlooked from a vehicle. Depending on season and movements, you may encounter giraffes, zebras, antelopes, elephants, and more.

Around midday, stop at a scenic, safe location for a bush lunch, then relax in the stillness of the wilderness. Continue walking in the afternoon as your guide shares more about the ecosystem, wildlife behaviour, traditional plant uses, and why Randilen matters as a community-managed conservation area. Arrive back at your fly-camp in time for sunset, dinner by the fire, and another night under the stars. Optional upgrade: Baobab Sleepout — spend the night perched in the canopy of an ancient baobab.

Who Is This Safari For?

Ideal for adventurous travellers who want a genuine bush overnight rather than lodge luxury, walking-safari enthusiasts, photographers seeking intimate wilderness atmosphere, couples or small groups looking for a short but immersive northern Tanzania safari, and guests who are comfortable with simple camping and early starts. Not designed for travellers seeking spa amenities, ensuite lodge bathrooms, or a purely vehicle-based itinerary.

What to Expect

Expect a private 4x4 game drive through Tarangire’s elephant and baobab country, then a shift onto foot in Randilen with a professional walking guide and armed ranger. Nights are in a lightweight fly-camp — dome tents, campfire meals, and open-sky silence — not a permanent lodge. Days start early; walking distances are moderate and paced for wildlife interpretation. Meals are full board on safari days. The optional Baobab Sleepout (extra) places you in a tree canopy for one night. Fitness for several hours of walking on uneven ground is important; this is an adventure experience, not a soft luxury circuit.

Best Time to Visit

Excellent year-round, with different moods. The dry season (June–October) concentrates wildlife around Tarangire’s water sources and keeps walking tracks firmer underfoot — peak elephant viewing. November–May brings greener landscapes, migratory birds, and softer light for photography; short rains can make paths muddier but rarely cancel walks. Shoulder months (March, November) often balance good game, fewer vehicles, and pleasant walking temperatures. Fly-camping and walking are weather-dependent — your guide adapts routes for safety.

Frequently Asked Questions

Fly-camping means a temporary wilderness camp pitched for your stay — typically dome tents, a mess/fire area, and basic bush facilities — then packed away so nothing permanent remains. There is no lodge building on this itinerary. Expect a simple, authentic overnight with the sounds of Randilen around you. Hot water and luxury spa facilities are not part of the experience; immersion is the point.
