Safari Overview

Western Tanzania is Africa's most rewarding secret. Where most visitors head north to the Serengeti, those in the know slip quietly west — to remote parks and landscapes that very few ever experience. Mahale Mountains, Katavi, and Lake Tanganyika are not simply alternatives to the northern circuit; they are a different Tanzania entirely, and once you have been here, the north will never quite feel the same.

This 10-day expedition combines three extraordinary destinations. Mahale Mountains National Park offers chimpanzee trekking on foot through mist-draped forests, followed by a swim in the crystal-clear waters of Lake Tanganyika. Katavi National Park — Tanzania's 'wild west' — delivers wildlife spectacles in August that rival anything on the continent: vast herds of hippos, buffalo, and elephant converging around the last remaining water. And the southern shores of Lake Tanganyika at Kasanga offer a window into one of East Africa's most authentic and overlooked communities.

Accessible only by light aircraft, this circuit rewards effort with extraordinary solitude. With Porcupine Tours guiding you on the ground, you travel with genuine local expertise from a family-run company that knows this remote region intimately.

Safari Highlights

🦧

Chimpanzee Trekking at Mahale

Trek on foot through the emerald forests of Mahale Mountains to spend time with wild chimpanzees. The M Group at Mahale is one of the most studied and habituated chimp communities in Africa, making encounters extraordinary.

🦛

Katavi in the Dry Season

In August, Katavi National Park puts on one of Africa's great wildlife shows. Thousands of hippos crowd into shrinking river pools; buffalo herds stretch across golden plains. Lions, leopards, and wild dogs complete a predator line-up rarely matched anywhere in Tanzania.

💧

Lake Tanganyika

The world's longest and second-deepest freshwater lake. Crystal-clear waters, white-sand beaches, and extraordinary endemic fish species. Swim, snorkel, kayak, or simply sit and watch the light change over the water.

✈️

Remote Fly-In Circuit

No roads connect these destinations. The only way in is by light aircraft — arriving over wilderness and landing on remote bush airstrips. This remoteness is the point: you share these parks with very few other travellers.

🌿

Authentic Western Tanzania

Western Tanzania is not on the tourist trail. The culture, pace, and atmosphere here feel genuinely off the map. From the Kasanga fishing village to the forest paths of Mahale, every moment feels unscripted.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive Dar es Salaam

Your western Tanzania adventure begins with an arrival in Dar es Salaam — Tanzania's largest city and commercial capital. You are transferred from Julius Nyerere International Airport to your hotel for a comfortable overnight rest before tomorrow's early departure west.

Dar es Salaam has more to offer than most visitors realise. If time allows, explore the Kariakoo market, dine at one of the city's excellent seafood restaurants along the Msasani peninsula, or stroll the seafront at Ocean Road. The city's melting pot of Indian Ocean cultures makes for a fascinating few hours.

Meals: Breakfast

Day 2: Fly to Kigoma & Boat to Mahale

After an early breakfast, you are transferred to the airport for your scheduled flight to Kigoma on the shores of Lake Tanganyika. On arrival at Kigoma, a boat transfer takes you south along the lake — one of Tanzania's most beautiful journeys, as the Mahale Mountains emerge dramatically from the forest ahead. Depending on conditions, the boat ride takes approximately three hours.

Arrive at Mahale Mountains National Park and settle into your accommodation on the beach. Your first evening is spent listening to the sounds of the rainforest and watching the sunset over Lake Tanganyika — the world's longest freshwater lake, stretching south towards Zambia and the DRC.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 3: Chimpanzee Trekking, Mahale

Today is the heart of your Mahale experience: chimpanzee trekking. Armed park rangers and experienced trackers lead you into the forest to locate the habituated M Group — a community of around 60 chimpanzees whose territory covers the lower slopes of the Mahale Mountains. Time spent with the chimps (typically one to two hours) is extraordinary — watching them feed, groom, play, and interact at close range is a safari experience unlike any other.

Return to the beach for refreshments, a swim in the lake, and dinner. The evenings at Mahale are perfectly quiet: no other camps are nearby, and the only sounds are the forest and the water.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 4: Forest Exploration & Lake Tanganyika

A second full day at Mahale offers more depth. Return to the forest for more chimpanzee trekking with the M Group, or explore the park on foot with your guide — looking for leopards, red colobus monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, blue duikers, and the extraordinary birdlife unique to this Albertine Rift forest.

In the afternoon, take to the lake by boat to fish, snorkel, or simply drift along the shore watching the mountains. The waters of Lake Tanganyika are clear enough to see the endemic cichlid fish swimming below you — some of which are found nowhere else on Earth.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 5: Fly to Katavi National Park

After breakfast, transfer to the Mahale airstrip for your light-aircraft flight to Katavi National Park. The flight itself is a highlight — crossing the remote western Tanzanian wilderness, from the mountains and lake to the vast miombo woodland and seasonal floodplains of Katavi. Transfer duration is approximately two to four hours by air depending on routing.

Arrive at Katavi and spend the afternoon on your first game drive. The timing is perfect: August is deep dry season, meaning wildlife concentrations are at their annual peak. The Katuma River pools draw extraordinary numbers of hippos and crocodiles; the floodplains host buffalo herds thousands strong.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 6: Full Day Game Drives, Katavi

A full day exploring Katavi — one of Tanzania's most rewarding game-viewing destinations. Your expert guide leads you across the Katisunga Plain and along the Katuma River, through vast miombo woodland and open floodplain. The wildlife here is extraordinary: massive hippo pods packed into shrinking river pools; buffalo herds of 2,000 or more moving in formation across the plain; lions, leopards, elephants, giraffes, zebras, and large concentrations of antelope.

Katavi also offers encounters you won't find elsewhere: the puku antelope (rare in Tanzania), sable and roan, and occasional sightings of the endangered African wild dog. The park has recorded over 400 bird species. Frequent stops at scenic viewpoints and wildlife hotspots make for exceptional photography.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 7: More of Katavi's Wild West

A third morning in Katavi — use it well. Game drives can begin at first light, when the temperature is cool and predators are most active. Return to the river pools, or venture further into the park's remote northern reaches. The solitude here is striking: visitor numbers in Katavi are a fraction of any northern circuit park.

An afternoon option: walking safari with an armed ranger, or a sunset game drive along the Katuma River. In the evening, recap the day around the campfire — sounds of the African bush filling the night air.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 8: Drive to Kasanga, Lake Tanganyika

This morning, your journey takes you overland from Katavi to Kasanga — a small, historic port town on the southern shores of Lake Tanganyika. The drive winds through the western Tanzanian bush and offers a chance to see everyday rural life at a pace that most safari guests never experience.

Kasanga holds a special place in history: it was here that the MV Liemba, originally built in Germany in 1913 and transported to East Africa in sections, was assembled and launched on Lake Tanganyika. The vessel served the lake for over a century. Settle in and spend the evening watching the lake from the shore.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 9: Kasanga & Lake Tanganyika

A full day to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of southern Lake Tanganyika. Take a boat excursion on the lake, visit the local fishing village, watch the daily rhythms of lakeside life, and spend time birding along the shore — Kasanga is a birder's delight, with numerous waterbirds and forest species.

This is a day for slowing down. The lake at Kasanga feels utterly removed from the rest of the world — a wide, still expanse of blue water bordered by mountains, fishing dugouts drifting in the morning light. It is a side of Tanzania that almost no visitor ever sees.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 10: Southern Highlands Drive & Fly Home

After a leisurely breakfast, your transfer takes you through the beautiful Southern Highlands of Tanzania to Songwe Airport near Mbeya. The drive winds through rolling highland scenery — a very different landscape from western Tanzania's bush, with green hills, mountain villages, and tea plantations.

From Songwe Airport, you fly to Dar es Salaam and connect with your onward international flight. Your western Tanzania adventure comes to a close — but the memories of Mahale's forests, Katavi's plains, and Lake Tanganyika's still blue water are yours to keep.

Meals: Breakfast & Lunch

What to Expect

Expect genuine wilderness, exceptional guiding, and very few other visitors. The western circuit is logistically complex — distances are long, flights are essential, and the infrastructure is deliberately simple. Mahale Mango Tree Bandas are government-run and comfortable rather than luxurious: clean rooms with en-suite facilities, good food, and an extraordinary location right on the Lake Tanganyika shore. Katavi Wildlife Camp is a small tented camp with an unfenced setting overlooking the Katisunga floodplain. This is authentic bush travel, not a luxury resort experience.

Best Time to Visit

The best time for this circuit is the dry season: June to October. August is ideal — chimpanzees are most easily tracked at Mahale (dry forest conditions reduce vegetation), and Katavi's wildlife concentrations are at their annual peak as water sources shrink. Note that Katavi camps typically close during the long rains (April–mid-June).

Frequently Asked Questions

How do we get to Mahale Mountains National Park?

Mahale is accessible only by air and boat — there are no roads into the park. You fly from Dar es Salaam to Kigoma on a scheduled flight (approximately 90 minutes), then transfer by motorboat south along Lake Tanganyika to the park entrance. The boat ride takes two to three hours depending on conditions. We handle all these connections seamlessly.

Is chimpanzee trekking in Mahale reliable?

Mahale has one of the highest success rates for chimpanzee encounters in Africa. The habituated M Group (approximately 60 individuals) is located by experienced TANAPA trackers each morning before guests set out. Sightings are near-certain in the dry season. The trek can range from 30 minutes to several hours depending on where the chimps have moved.

What are the baggage restrictions on bush flights?

Bush flights on the western circuit typically allow 15kg of luggage per person in a soft bag (no hard suitcases), with 5kg hand luggage. We provide detailed packing guidance on booking. Travelling light is strongly recommended — the camps provide laundry service.

Can we upgrade the accommodation?

Yes — this itinerary uses solid, well-located camps. If you prefer a more elevated lodge experience, we can upgrade to Greystoke Mahale (one of Africa's most celebrated lodges) and Chada Katavi. Both significantly elevate the accommodation experience. Please contact us for a quote.

Is this suitable for first-time safari travellers?

The western circuit is best suited to travellers who have already experienced at least one Tanzania safari. The logistics are complex, the accommodation is simpler than the northern circuit, and the environment is genuinely remote. That said, Porcupine Tours handles all the complexity — if you are a first-time traveller with a sense of adventure and an appetite for something very different, we are delighted to talk you through it.
